Preface: Living Between Worlds

At the age of twelve, something happened to me that changed my life forever. As I lay in the liminal space before sleep, I was immersed in a non-ordinary, ineffable encounter I was unprepared for—an overwhelming, loving presence that I would later interpret as a glimpse of a deeper, sacred Transcendent reality beyond what we normally see. It was at once awesomely beautiful yet frightening.

I didn’t have words for it then, but I knew it was real. What began in a single instant continued to unfold over many years. I called it the Luminous Web—a radiant sense of interconnectedness, as if every leaf, bird, and heartbeat were part of a vast and loving whole.

I was no longer separate. I was part of something sacred, intelligent, and alive. Despite life’s ups and downs, I felt an absolute trust and faith in that reality.

It wasn’t an idea I read about in a book or a belief grounded in tradition. It was a direct experience that stirred something within me that never faded. At the time, I didn’t link it to any religious figure. As the years went by and my journey deepened, I realized that the same Reality I encountered as a boy was the same Love I would later find in the life and presence of Jesus Christ.

And yet, when I returned to everyday life, the world I saw seemed the opposite of that Love. The society I re-entered taught me something else entirely:

• You are alone
• Others are threats and rivals, not kin
• All that matters is matter
• Compete, consume, and control
• The Sacred is irrelevant

Our systems, even the most well-meaning ones, seemed built on fragmentation, fear, and material striving—a world designed around separation.

That contradiction broke my heart.

I didn’t have the language to name it back then, but now I call it the Culture of Separation. My father, sensing my heartbreak, asked me a simple question that became my life’s compass:

“Well, son… what will you do about it?”

That question haunted me—not in a burdensome way, but in a way that awakened purpose. It set me on a path that would take decades to walk. I spent the next fifty years searching for answers.

I studied. I built. I made mistakes. I fell in love. Got married. Had children. Got divorced. Remarried. I tried to live according to what I had seen. I founded organizations, started companies, ran networks, and facilitated community movements that attempted to embody the coherence I once glimpsed as a boy. Along the way, I drew from every way of knowing I had access to—trained as a scientist, shaped by poetry, grounded in the concrete practice of community work. I welcomed wisdom from Indigenous elders, priests, Buddhist scholars, systems theorists, diverse spiritual traditions, forests, and pilot whales.

For years, I followed the thread of that early luminous experience, trusting the sense of belonging and sacred wholeness I had once touched. Everything changed in 1990, when that same Presence seemed to pursue me again—in a form I never expected.

It came while I was driving through Mexico, still grappling with how to translate that early glimpse into something practical and embodied. Out of nowhere, the veil lifted—not revealing what I was seeking, but what I had longed to see. I saw a figure on the road—Jesus Christ.

It wasn’t a metaphor or a dream, but a vision imprinted on my soul. I felt lifted upward, and suddenly I saw the planet from above. Instead of the lights of cities, I saw golden rays rising from the hearts of billions of people—streams of light converging into a great, radiant heart. It pulsed with a Love so total it dissolved all boundaries.

Only later did I recognize what I had seen: this was the heart of Jesus, not a distant ruler, but the very Love I had sensed as a child, now made visible, made personal. It was not a symbol or a belief but the living pattern of Divine Love pouring into the world.

What I had witnessed was not a new religion to be imposed but a sacred map—a Divine Design, what I later called the Ancient Blueprint—a Sacred Design embedded in reality itself.

This vision revealed more than Love as a feeling—it showed me Love as a structure.

The radiant heart above Earth formed a vertical thread: the connection between the Transcendent and the Immanent. It wasn’t abstract theology—it was an actual reality. I began to see how the Divine pattern could be mirrored on Earth—not just through personal devotion, but in how we live, relate, and build together.

That vertical descent of Love demanded horizontal embodiment: shaping community, economy, and belonging from the inside out. What I had seen from above, I now felt called to bring to the ground below.

The luminous, loving presence I had once glimpsed in all things stood before me in the person of Jesus. It wasn’t a different reality; it was that same sacred coherence from childhood, now embodied—not as a doctrine, but as a living pattern of Divine Love.

That vision gave me direction. If my first experience had raised the question, “How can a world so whole produce lives so fractured?”—this second experience began to offer an answer:

I didn’t suddenly become a pastor, but realized I had been given a “ministry”—one I was already living.

My work in community—from apprenticing with an Indigenous/Christian medicine woman to developing local food systems, economies, and civic networks—became a form of spiritual inquiry. Could the coherence I saw at twelve become a living pattern among us? Could Divine Love form structurally in neighborhoods, economies, and everyday relationships?

Over time, I began to see the pattern. I recognized it in Jesus’ teachings, especially his radical call to Love God and Love Others—not as a poetic metaphor or a call to be a good person, but as the very structure of Reality.

I saw it in the early Christian ecclesia, and again in Mahatma Gandhi’s village movements, Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne’s Sarvodaya Shramadana network of village economies, and in the Parallel Polis movement created during the communist rule of Czechoslovakia. I saw it in Indigenous councils and recovery circles.

In each case, Love was not an ideal. It was the infrastructure.

This book is the fruit of that journey. It’s not a memoir, though it tells my story. It’s not a manual, though it offers models. It’s not a theology, though it touches the sacred.

It’s a field guide for remembering how we were meant to live.

As I wrote this book, I saw more clearly how deeply our civilization has “de-platformed” the Divine. Even those who believe in a higher power often leave it out of our civic life, governance, and design frameworks. That, too, is part of the Culture of Separation.

Here’s the more profound truth I’ve seen: Most people I meet believe in something greater. Call it God, Spirit, Divine Love, the Sacred. Surveys say nearly 90% of us believe in a higher power. Yet our society is organized as if the sacred is private and irrelevant—as if love is too soft to structure a culture, and virtue is admirable but insufficient for survival.

Family, religion, and education teach us to be kind, generous, forgiving, and truthful. And yet, to function in today’s systems, we’re often forced to compete, hoard, dominate, and wear a mask.

We’re taught the Virtues because they echo something we already know—they align with the deeper design of Reality. Despite knowing the truth of the Virtues, we’ve been conditioned to act otherwise: to take rather than give, to protect rather than trust, to perform rather than be.

That dissonance wears us down. Some compartmentalize, others give up and numb out. Many—especially our youth—experience ongoing anxiety or depression. Still others fight against “the system,” addressing symptoms rather than the prime cause: separation.

And still, no one escapes the ache of living out of alignment with who we truly are.

That ache is not a flaw. It’s the signal of something sacred breaking through. I have felt that ache myself since I was a young boy, standing between worlds: the “joyful cosmos” I had experienced as profoundly true, and the world I was expected to survive in.

This book is for those who feel that signal and want to respond—not with despair but with creativity, not by retreating but by participating in the birth of something new.

Not of a utopia that never was, but of an ancient truth that still lives beneath the noise: that we are made for communion. That love is the organizing design principle of reality. That the sacred is not just somewhere else. It is here, awaiting our attention, to align our lives with the grand design.

That’s how we begin to build a Culture of Connection, what I call Symbiotic Culture.

Introduction: The Turning Point We’ve Been Waiting For

There’s a question echoing within the human heart today—a quiet longing beneath the chaos of politics, polarization, and planetary crisis. It’s not just “Why can’t we all get along?” but something more profound:

We’re flooded with information and good intentions, but trust erodes. We build movements for justice, systems for change, and technologies for connection, yet still drift apart. Even our most inspired efforts hit the same invisible wall: fragmentation, fatigue, and disillusionment.

But what if the problem isn’t just institutional or political? What if it’s existential, rooted in a cultural architecture that teaches us to relate to one another, the Earth, and the Divine as separate, competing parts instead of one interwoven whole?

That question has haunted me and guided my life’s work.

This book is not a memoir, a manual, or a thesis. It offers a cultural turning point—an invitation to look beyond ideological debate and remember a deeper reality we’ve forgotten: a shared foundation beneath our systems, stories, and suffering.

I call it the Ancient Blueprint. By this, I mean the sacred pattern of reality—spiritual, social, and ecological—that has guided thriving communities and cultures throughout history. It holds the key to birthing what I now call the Symbiotic Age: a new era of human flourishing rooted in mutuality, sacred design, and connection.

Love As the Structure of Reality

If this book has a single conviction, it is this: “Love God and Love Others.”

This isn’t just a metaphor, moral teaching, or call to be nice—it’s a revelation of how reality is structured.

He was revealing the nature of existence: that we live in a relational universe. Everything is connected—nothing exists in isolation. From the subatomic bonds that hold matter together to the ecosystems that sustain life and the communities that shape our humanity, reality is woven through relationships.

This Love, revealed in Jesus and made available to all, is not a vague force but a living Presence—calling us into relationship and service. This is the Kingdom of Heaven: not merely a future destination, but a present reality—made visible wherever love, justice, and mutual belonging reign. It is the divine order manifesting when we align with the sacred pattern that holds everything together.

Love is more than an ethical ideal. It is the generative power that binds the cosmos—the blueprint by which life flourishes. Whether you call it Divine Love, the Spirit, or simply the presence of God, this Love is not distant. It is alive, personal, and draws us into communion.

Received by grace, Divine Love awakens in us a desire to love in return—not just upward, but outward. Love seeks the other—healing, bridging, belonging.

This movement of Love—outward, connective, generative—doesn’t stop with individuals. It forms the scaffolding of communities, offering a tangible structure for how we live, relate, and build together.

The Lineage of Love

Not only is this structure of Love written into the cosmos, but it is also embodied in human lives and culture. It is a sacred pattern passed down not just in texts but in communities of practice, courage, and compassion.

It’s also the lineage that has informed and inspired me, from Jesus to Mahatma Gandhi to Dr. A.T. Ariyaratne, and is carried forward in the community movements I’ve helped co-create—living patterns of love and service that repeat and adapt at every scale, from small circles to whole bioregional economies.

This “lineage of love” is not only moral—it’s structural. Jesus, Gandhi, and Dr. Ariyaratne were not merely good men; they left a legacy of cultural infrastructure. Each one translated Love into systems and communities that honored the dignity of every human being. They refused to confine spiritual truth to private experience or political ideology. Instead, they showed us how to build what I now call Symbiotic Networks—containers that can gather people across human-made divisions.

This is the shift from “love as sentiment” to “love as structure.” But that sacred pattern has been overshadowed and obscured by a competing cultural logic that distorts love into control and relationship into rivalry.

The Culture of Separation: The Hidden Wound

Much of the suffering we see today isn’t merely the result of bad actors or flawed systems. It’s the predictable outgrowth of something more profound and harder to see: the Culture of Separation.

This culture functions like an unseen operating system. It subtly whispers:

And other people? They are threats, not kin.

These messages don’t need to be taught in classrooms or preached from podiums. They’re embedded in our media, institutions, economic assumptions, and unconscious habits of thought. Even our most well-meaning social change efforts often reflect this hidden worldview. It’s what turns noble intentions to bring people together into isolated silos that keep them apart. That’s why we create more programs, launch more campaigns, and publish more content—yet still feel more fragmented and powerless than ever.

Most tragically, this culture convinces us that our deep yearning for wholeness is naïve or weak.

But here’s a deeper truth: our desire for connection is not a sign of weakness—it’s evidence of a profound structure breaking through. That structure—the Ancient Blueprint—still resides within us. It doesn’t need to be invented; it needs to be remembered and reclaimed.

Cultural Recovery: Healing from the Addiction to Separation

Reclaiming this loving legacy requires a radical shift to what the 12-Step recovery movement calls “a new way of life” — from our collective addiction to separation, to a conscious practice of connection. Put another way, to recover from the wounding of the Culture of Separation, we must simultaneously recover our connection to this Ancient Blueprint.

Like healing from addiction, cultural recovery begins with the courage to see clearly and the humility to try something new. The first step is to acknowledge that we are addicted to old ways of thinking and doing: domination, division, control, and the illusion of separation. We keep reenacting the same patterns—from new systems and structures to reforming, protesting, attacking, and seizing power—hoping they’ll deliver different results.

But how’s that working for us? It isn’t. It can’t.

As you’ll see throughout this book, the second and third steps in the recovery journey require turning our lives over to a higher power. I suggest that higher power is the Transcendent, and the Ancient Blueprint is the sacred design for how that power flows through our lives and communities.

Think about it. Our crisis isn’t just political or institutional—it’s spiritual.

We’ve built political, economic, cultural, and even religious systems with good intentions. But over time, many have become disconnected from the very Source they were meant to reflect: Divine Love. When competition replaces cooperation, dominance eclipses humility, and power outweighs compassion, we lose touch with the sacred pattern of communion that was always meant to guide us.

We’ve arranged our lives into silos—tribes, factions, political parties, gangs, cartels, ideologies—trapped in loops of fear and rivalry, unable to see beyond the identities we’ve inherited and the cultural habits we’re addicted to. We talk about “thinking outside the box,” but we’re still operating within the logic of the box: domination, usury, control. We’ve mistaken conformity for wisdom and outsourced discernment to distant authorities.

Cultural recovery is not about tearing everything down.

The issue isn’t a lack of goodness. This sacred recovery is already happening. It manifests in ordinary people performing extraordinary acts daily—quietly serving, helping, and healing. That’s why so many local acts of goodness—billions of them—occur outside the spotlight of institutional power and media.

It’s that these acts remain scattered, isolated, and invisible to each other.

This book invites us to face that challenge—and offers the hope of gathering the scattered embers into a coherent flame. Throughout history, others have faced this same rupture and responded not by seizing power but by embodying Love in action.

A Living Lineage: Embodying the Ancient Blueprint

This is the path I’ve chosen to walk. It is both personal and cultural, born from deep spiritual conviction and expressed through practical action. It follows the lineage I mentioned—a living thread stretching through history, weaving through cultures, communities, and courageous lives. This lineage first revealed itself to me through Jesus, the essence of what I now call the Ancient Blueprint: a sacred architecture rooted in Divine Love.

In this realm, the last are first, the peacemakers are blessed, and the humble inherit the Earth.

Jesus built not so much a religion but a countercultural movement—embodied and practiced by the early Christian ecclesia. These small, local kinship assemblies lived out the Kingdom of Heaven within the empire, forming networks of mutual benefit in the face of domination. They didn’t aim to overthrow Rome with swords. Instead, they lived a different truth, and in doing so, they seeded a parallel society.

That pattern—the Ancient Blueprint—did not disappear. It has re-emerged wherever people remembered who they were and organized around what matters most. I observed it in Gandhi’s vision of Sarvodaya, a commonwealth of self-reliant village republics.

I saw it again in the work of Dr. Ariyaratne, who established a network of over 5,000 villages across Sri Lanka based on shared virtues, mutual uplift, and spiritual awakening. These were not programs but living organisms—parallel societies grounded in the transcendent, embodied in the local.

Parallel Societies Across History

And I saw it in the Czech Parallel Polis: a civic resistance movement born under communist rule that refused to fight the empire on its terms. Instead, it created a culture of truth, moral coherence, and community in the shadow of oppression. Like the early Christians and the Sarvodaya villages, the Parallel Polis didn’t seek to conquer. It sought to cohere.

This lineage of the Ancient Blueprint spans from Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom to Gandhi’s Sarvodaya, Dr. Ari’s village networks, and the Czech Parallel Polis.

Though arising from different cultural and spiritual roots, each movement gave form to the same sacred architecture—a living echo of the Ancient Blueprint in action.

I recognized the same recurring pattern in these diverse communities and movements: ordinary people rediscovering their divine dignity, that they were made in the image of God, organizing around shared Virtues, and building communities of mutual benefit. Not through hierarchy, but through humble coherence. Not through ideology, but through love made visible.

That is what Symbiotic Culture seeks to become—a Culture of Connection, emerging from the grassroots—from the lived reality of local communities, where relationships, trust, and mutual care are built face-to-face, neighbor to neighbor, and the existing regional networks are connected.

This is how we apply the Ancient Blueprint to bring Heaven to Earth—not all at once, not through a sweeping act of policy or power, but step by step, soul by soul, neighborhood by neighborhood, community by community.

From Principle to Practice: Translating Love into Systems of Belonging

If the Ancient Blueprint revealed a sacred pattern, the challenge was translating these Divine Design principles into grounded practice. For me, it began with a haunting question:

How do we translate “Love God and Love Others” from spiritual conviction into civic design?

Models for community change usually start with external solutions—new systems, institutions, and technologies, all of which require formal organization and funding. In places like Logan Heights and Sherman Heights in San Diego and later Reno, Nevada, we learned that true transformation must be revealed, not imposed. It has to grow organically from the people, the place, and the presence of the Divine.

We weren’t simply launching new projects—we were testing whether Divine Love could become the organizing force of civic life.

And it can.

What emerged wasn’t another nonprofit, initiative, or ideology. It was a living network ecosystem: Symbiotic Culture.

The repeatable pattern that appeared in neighborhood gatherings, local food systems, and living economy networks became what we later called Symbiotic Culture DNA — a set of living principles and protocols that could spread and scale virally in many communities simultaneously. It resembled the organic mycelium network beneath a forest—quiet, alive, and connective, linking people and efforts through trust, love, and shared purpose.

The community doesn’t need to be formally or “professionally” designed when we align with that living system. It emerges naturally, like cells organizing into a body. This is why the heart of Symbiotic Culture is not an institution. It’s a way of being that acknowledges we live in a relational universe, where everything is indeed interrelated.

From Love to Structure: Symbiotic Networks as a Civic Ecosystem

Over the years, one of the most powerful embodiments of relational design—the idea that different groups, systems, or entities are meaningfully interconnected—has taken shape in what I call Symbiotic Networks.

They are not top-down institutions or loosely structured gatherings. When aligned, they foster trust, reveal common needs, and unite people across differences, enabling lives, vocations, and worldviews to come together in mutual service.

These networks decentralize agency rather than centralize control. They don’t demand ideological conformity. They invite alignment around universal Virtues, shared values, and common community needs.

In this book, I will share examples from my community work in low-income, multicultural, gang-affected neighborhoods in San Diego, where we addressed public safety, and in Reno, Nevada, where we strengthened a local living economy, built a Local Food System Network, and established a neighbor-to-neighbor network, along with an arts, culture, and sustainability festival.

These Symbiotic Networks can take shape in any neighborhood or an entire region, and by the end of this book, you will see how it’s been done, and how you can be a “node of change” in your community.

Each node is more than a point on a map; it’s a living cell in a greater body, a local hub of trust, relationship, and purpose.

Whether it’s a neighborhood, a faith community, a main street business, a grassroots nonprofit, or a circle of friends, every node becomes a vessel of mutual care and sacred interconnection—woven into a networked ecosystem of renewal.

These lived experiments represent more than a method—they embody the cultural shift this book aims to catalyze.

A Cultural Change Movement, Not a Program

This book is not about scaling a toolkit. It’s about catalyzing a cultural movement—a shift from separation to connection, scarcity to generosity, and domination to service. It’s about revealing a possibility that has always existed: that we are already one body, interdependent, and part of a greater whole that longs to manifest in the real world.

The practical outgrowth of that vision is what I call the birth of a Symbiotic Age—a global commonwealth of regional economies rooted in trust, virtue, and local belonging.

These are not pipe dreams. The Sarvodaya Movement established an ecosystem of 5,000 village societies in Sri Lanka. In the Czech Republic, the Parallel Polis demonstrated how spiritual communities can survive and thrive under oppression. In our work, we witnessed fractured communities and cities begin to heal, not through ideology but incarnated love.

You are already part of it, right where you are. I hope this book will help you see your role in this shift. That change begins with how we see reality, what we assume about people, power, and the nature of the world we inhabit.

The Symbiotic movement we are building requires more than new structures or systems. It calls for a deeper way of seeing—a lens that can sustain transformation beyond moments of urgency or crisis.

That lens is a worldview.

A Relational Worldview: Making Sense in a Fractured Age

Our worldviews shape everything—what we notice, how we relate, and what we believe is possible. Many of today’s political, ecological, and economic crises are interrelated. They are symptoms of a more profound spiritual crisis rooted in fragmented and competing worldviews. Yet most of us don’t realize we have a worldview because we don’t see it — we see the world through it. Like a pair of invisible lenses, it shapes how we interpret everything around us.

So, given the diversity of competing worldviews, how do we unite?

Here’s the good news.

Let me explain.

A relational worldview does not erase difference. Instead, it offers a deeper shared language, not merely of words but of understanding and orientation. This language is rooted not in control or separation but in communion, participation, and mutual recognition. It provides a common way to perceive, relate to, and act across cultures and traditions.

This worldview is implicit in the Sermon on the Mount, Indigenous cosmologies, and the Gospel of John’s vision of the Logos—the divine pattern of wisdom and relational order woven into all creation. It is not a belief system, but a way of being—one that aligns with the reality that everything is connected and nothing exists in isolation.

That’s what I mean when I say the ideas in this book are grounded in reality, not merely idealistic or technocratic. You will learn how local communities organically develop through trusted third-party connections, person-to-person, and network-to-network. You’ll discover how this process of emergent community operates in the real world, enabling you to replicate it in your region or network.

Walking the Path Together

The title of this book—Birthing the Symbiotic Age—is not metaphorical. It’s literal. I’ve come to believe we are in the midst of a planetary passage from an age of extraction and domination to one of mutualism and service.

This isn’t something that can be engineered from the top down.

The tools I present are not meant to replace what’s already working. They are designed to amplify and magnify it by “Connecting the Good.” By ‘the Good,’ I mean the people, projects, and institutions already aligned with compassion, justice, healing, and mutual uplift—efforts like building local economies and food systems, faith-based service, neighborhood care networks, regenerative culture, mutual aid networks, civic engagement, and much more.

Connecting the Good means weaving these often-isolated efforts across organizations, faith communities, businesses, local governments, and mutual aid groups into living ecosystem networks of cooperation and shared purpose. It’s a way of transforming scattered acts of service into a coherent Power for renewal—perhaps humanity’s greatest untapped resource and superpower.

You’ll learn how the logic of communion can shape everything from governance to technology, and start to see how new patterns of belonging can emerge. Over the past forty years, I’ve seen local citizens in drug- and gang-infested neighborhoods reduce crime and create peace. I’ve seen networks that grow local living economies and food systems. Introduction: A Protocol for Belonging in an Age of Disconnection

The idea for this mini-essay came from a wonderful conversation with my friend and colleague Bill Melton, who I mention in my book Birthing the Symbiotic Age. Bill helped us with the development of our technology platform, OneSphera. He has a deep history in building the internet’s early protocols through his pioneering roles in Verifone, PayPal, AOL, and other foundational tech platforms.

In that conversation, Bill reflected on how the spread of early Christianity and the architecture of the internet both succeeded through simple, decentralized protocols—and how this insight can help us build a new, trustworthy network of communities today.

In a world fractured by tribalism, institutional decay, and spiritual alienation, many of us sense that something deeper must emerge—something that can weave humanity back into coherence without demanding uniformity.

My work, and my book Birthing the Symbiotic Age, is rooted in this conviction: that a new civilization is already emerging, not through centralized design, but through grassroots reweaving—where the relational fabric of communities is being restored through love, virtue, and shared purpose.

In asking how this emergence could scale, I’ve returned repeatedly to a question:

What kind of invisible infrastructure could allow diverse communities—religious and secular, urban and rural, left and right—to cohere, collaborate, and coordinate across silos?

The answer didn’t come from the Internet—it came through it.

Surprisingly, the architecture of the Internet revealed a living analogy to something far older: the sacred design embedded in creation itself. Just as the web required a universal protocol—HTTP—to enable decentralized communication, what I call the Symbiotic Culture DNA offers a kind of spiritual and civic protocol for a new, relational society.

In the sections that follow, I explore this analogy in six parts—moving from the logic of HTTP to the legacy of the early Church, and from emerging local networks to the future role of AI.

Part 1: The Hidden Power of HTTP—How the Internet Learned to Speak

Before websites, social media, or even email became ubiquitous, there was a problem: computers couldn’t talk to one another. They used different formats, systems, and rules.

The solution? A shared protocol—a kind of agreement that didn’t care about content but made communication possible across all platforms.

This was HTTP—the HyperText Transfer Protocol. Simple, elegant, and universal, it enabled a client (like a web browser) to make requests to a server in a standardized way. In return, the server would respond with content the browser could understand.

But HTTP didn’t emerge from ideology. It emerged from a deeper layer of agreement, a shared network operating system known as the TCP/IP stack—that made such interaction possible in the first place.

In the same way, Symbiotic Culture doesn’t require people to share an ideology. But it does depend on a shared relational worldview, a kind of spiritual operating system rooted in connection, mutuality, and dignity.

Let’s pause to examine why this new operating system is essential today.

We now live in a globally networked age, yet we're still using primitive 19th and 20th century organizational structures—hierarchical, siloed, and command-based. These structures are obsolete—unable to hold the complexity, diversity, and accelerated pace of change of our contemporary world.

What we need is a new operating system rooted in relationality—and a protocol to activate it.

Part 2: The Protocol for a New Civilization

Now imagine a protocol—not for machines, but for communities.

This is what I call Symbiotic Culture DNA: a simple, universal relational protocol—a kind of moral handshake and invisible scaffolding of trust—that enables individuals, families, churches, organizations, businesses, local governments, and movements to communicate, coordinate, and cooperate—not through coercion or ideology, but through a shared relational foundation.

Just as a digital handshake verifies identity online, a moral handshake confirms alignment through character, trustworthiness, and shared values.

Rooted in trust, this shared relational foundation reflects what I describe in my book as the Ancient Blueprint—a sacred pattern woven into creation itself.

This worldview is not a new ideology or “one ring to rule them all.” It is a living system of connection—a kind of moral architecture that enables people, communities, and organizations to connect across the silos of what I call the Culture of Separation. It invites us into a shared field of relationship, where diverse expressions of purpose and practice can still communicate, collaborate, and grow in mutual respect.

This understanding echoes the wisdom of the 7th-century Eastern Orthodox saint, Maximus the Confessor, who wrote that the aim of spiritual life is to “unite the cosmos with love” and “bring together that which has become separate.”

That vision describes not just personal salvation, but the transformation of the world through relationships ordered by Divine Love.

This yearning—to live in alignment with the Ancient Blueprint—naturally gives rise to a relational worldview, and ultimately to Symbiotic Culture DNA as its working protocol.

Before any protocol can take root, something must shift within us—what ancient wisdom calls metanoia: a turning of heart and mind toward a greater love. It is this inward transformation that gives rise to the outward architecture of trust.

Despite their differences, many of them operate on similar principles:

• Shared Purpose: A clear reason for coming together that transcends politics, religion, economic class, profit, partisanship, or ego—rooted in what I have termed a Transcendent power that’s bigger than any one of us.

• Shared principles of mutual Care and Trust: Relationships rooted in dignity, not transaction.

• Virtue and Vocational Fidelity: A commitment to inner formation and doing one’s part with excellence and humility.

• Common Community Needs: Local community needs guide action. Inner formation leads to outer action in face-to-face relations.

• Distributed Hubs: Leadership is shared, not hoarded. Circles form around shared Virtues and ripple outward.

These are not abstract ideals. They are already at work in what I call “islands of coherence”—local, living systems of mutual aid and rootedness, each grounded in trust, relationship, and shared purpose, waiting to be relationally connected.

Part 3: The Anatomy of a Symbiotic Protocol

Let’s return to the HTTP metaphor.

HTTP sends requests using headers—fields like Content-Type, Authorization, User-Agent—that tell the server how to respond. These headers don’t dictate the content itself, but they make communication possible.

In a similar way, a Symbiotic Circle Protocol might carry its own “headers”:

What HTTP did for distributed information, the Symbiotic Protocol does for distributed belonging.

It doesn’t require central control. It assumes diversity. And like the internet, it grows stronger with use and network effects—because each act of trust strengthens and multiplies the network.

Part 4: This is Already Happening

This isn’t a future fantasy. It’s already emerging in the quiet, connective spaces of our lives.

We see glimpses of the Symbiotic Protocol in:

• Faith-based networks that build food systems, family mentoring programs, and justice ministries rooted in self-giving love.

• Regenerative communities organizing around permaculture, bioregional economics, and local resilience.

• Civic bridge-building initiatives connecting red and blue (in the American context) in local deliberation and shared service.

• Localist and cosmolocal efforts weaving decentralized economies based on need, not extraction.

• Mission-driven businesses operating by a triple bottom line—people, planet, purpose.

What could unite these is not a new ideology or philosophy, but a relational worldview—a kind of Ancient Blueprint expressed through the lives of ordinary people who act from a place of moral clarity, instead of institutional loyalty.

I’ve seen entire communities begin to transform when one person chooses to live by this protocol of Love. When someone is willing to hold space—for others and the networks they already belong to—with presence, dignity, and spiritual clarity, the effects ripple outward.

Part 5: The First Protocol of Love

There’s a deeper analogy worth naming—one far older than HTTP. As my conversation with Bill Melton continued, we came back to first principles.

We were discussing how, in the centuries following Jesus’s earthly ministry, Christianity spread rapidly across continents—in the shadow of the brutal Roman Empire, facing waves of persecution, with no budget, no institutional backing, and no central command.

What made that possible was not institutional strategy but relational protocol.

So while the term “spiritual handshake” is metaphorical, it accurately expresses the trust-building tools early Christians used to survive and thrive within a hostile empire.

These included:

• Coded language and symbols — such as the ichthys (fish) symbol drawn in the sand
• Code phrases — like “The Way” or “Maranatha,” signaling shared faith
• Hospitality rituals — where Christian homes became house churches, and trust was discerned over time
• The Kiss of Peace — a gesture reserved for those recognized as part of the Body
• Recognition of virtue and moral character — over social status or credentials
• Discernment and relational trust — developed slowly through mutual service and witness

These weren’t enforced from above. Like today’s Symbiotic Circles, they were discovered, practiced, and refined from the ground up—emerging organically as part of a culture of Love, sacrifice, and shared spiritual identity.

Like the early Church, it relied on personal trust, moral clarity, and shared purpose—not centralized power. It reminds us that sacred communities can become sanctuaries of renewal within broken systems, growing quietly, relationally, from the bottom up.

In his insightful new Substack series on church renewal, Patrick O’Connell cites Romans 16 as “a snapshot of a Spirit-formed network”—a glimpse into the living web of relationships that sustained the early Church. Drawing from both the books of Romans and Acts, he shows how this decentralized movement grew through co-laboring households, cities, and churches—rooted not in dominance hierarchies, but in trust, spiritual kinship, and shared mission.

His reflections affirm that what we now call Symbiotic Culture DNA echoes this original design: a sacred web of belonging shaped by the Divine Pattern of Love.

The early Christian movement, at its core, was a countercultural protocol: a way of living based on the Logos—the Divine Pattern of Love revealed in Christ. “Love God. Love Others.” That was the organizing principle, the relational format. It shaped how people formed community, practiced economics, cared for the vulnerable, and resisted empire.

They remind us that transformation doesn’t begin with control. It begins with vision. The early Christians saw Jesus Christ—the Divine—in one another, and this changed how they lived, shared, and loved.

Just as HTTP provided a neutral space for data to flow, this divine protocol provided sacred space for community to form.

So must we.

Part 6: The Role of AI and Technology

As we move into an age shaped by artificial intelligence, this protocol will need to be digitally interoperable as well. OneSphera, a platform I helped develop (and described in Birthing the Symbiotic Age), aims to support this vision by helping communities:

• Identify shared purpose

• Map local needs, gifts, and assets

• Connect across silos and geography

• Track relational trust, not just transactions

This calls forth the deeper question:

Who or what will "govern" AI? And where do humans fit in this new architecture of intelligence?

The answer, I believe, is this: at the heart of everything – including AI -- is the call to establish and practice these protocols of Love as our true operating system.

Bill Melton notes that autonomous AI agents may become the next critical protocol—especially in an era when massive centralized systems seek control. These agents must be designed to establish trust levels, authenticity, and provenance—mirroring the sacred handshake of early Christianity or the integrity checks of HTTP.

But let me be clear: technology must serve the relational. Not the other way around.

While platforms and AI agents may help us scale Symbiotic Circles and Networks, the real work happens face to face—in families, neighborhoods, churches, businesses, gardens, schools, and cafés.

The protocol lives in people. Not code.

Conclusion: From Resistance to Cultural Revival and Renewal

In a world dominated by what I call the Culture of Separation, we don’t need another ideology or power grab from the Left or the Right. We need a relational protocol that allows life to flourish across boundaries.

HTTP gave rise to the Internet not by dictating what people should say, but by allowing them to speak—and be heard—across the globe. Symbiotic Culture DNA offers something similar for our time: it gives communities a way to see each other, trust each other, and build together—without requiring them to agree on everything.

This Protocol of Love doesn’t require new institutions to begin. It can take root right where you are—within existing networks: churches, charities, businesses, local governments, regenerative initiatives, and neighborhood groups.

The Symbiotic Circle is a flexible container that can be adapted to your unique context, whether that’s a parish, a purpose-driven business, or a civic movement. You can start small—with people you already trust—co-creating circles of shared purpose, spiritual clarity, and mutual care. From there, these circles ripple outward, forming networks grounded in relationship rather than control.

The future won’t be engineered from the top down. It will be cultivated from the ground up—through trust, virtue, and shared purpose.

That’s the only way to scale belonging. And it starts, not with systems, but with souls who remember the truth:

And Love still spreads naturally, as this protocol is already alive in the world, moving through each one of us—even as new technologies and AI come online.

From Separation to Connection: A World and Worldview at a Crossroads

Events at home and abroad are a painful wake-up call to the dysfunction of our current materialist worldview — and the systems it has produced. This crisis is not only American but global, shaped by what I call the Culture of Separation, whose logic stretches back more than 2,500 years.

The remedy is what I call the Culture of Connection.

We see it in neighborhood care networks, food system initiatives, resilience groups, mutual aid projects, churches and charities serving neighbors, purpose-driven businesses, service clubs, and bridge-building efforts. It already exists, hidden in plain sight — waiting to be activated, aligned, and amplified.

The pathway forward does not compete with the good that is already happening; it strengthens it, unites it, and multiplies its impact.

Connecting the Good into a Greater Coherent Whole

Billions are already engaged in this work, often without realizing they are part of a larger pattern: over 70 million nonprofits, civic groups, and faith communities anchoring billions of people worldwide — joined by nearly 68 million purpose-driven Main Street businesses that sustain livelihoods and hold neighborhoods together.

Consider just a few examples: the Catholic Church, with 1.4 billion members across 222,000 parishes and 134,000 mission stations; Rotary, Lions, and other service clubs uniting 5 million people in 100,000 local chapters; and more than 10,000 U.S. bridge-building groups working across divides.

Think of this as Love made operational — not just an inner conviction but a civic protocol, much like TCP/IP or HTTP made digital networks possible. Love, lived as structure, becomes the bridge across our fragmented and wounded communities.

From Local Circles to National and Global Networks

So what does this look like in practice?

Based on my forty years of lived community-building experience, it begins small: with circles of trust, meals with neighbors, shared projects that weave connection where division once stood, all of which spreads organically as radiating Love.

As these acts take root, they naturally grow into wider circles, networks, and eventually reshape local economies and civic life. And because this is happening simultaneously in villages, towns, and cities around the world, it can replace old top-down models with new network-centric structures of trust and coordination that link communities together.

My book, Birthing the Symbiotic Age: An Ancient Blueprint to Unite Humanity (released soon), lays out this pathway in practical detail — showing how communities like yours can bring Heaven to Earth, a way of living where Love and trust can become the norm.

Symbiotic Culture always follows the same developmental pathway: from intimate circles to societies, from societies to networks, from networks to a living Parallel Polis.

So what does this look like in practice? Let’s now turn to the proven pathway that makes this possible.

The Pathway of Symbiotic Culture

Symbiotic Culture is a society where mutually beneficial relationships and collaborations among diverse groups of people — from families to neighborhoods, communities, nations, and worldwide — become the norm.

As I suggested in the previous section, local movements always begin small, through the quality of the Being of the initiators. It’s the quality of being, not the quantity of “beings” involved. Don’t worry about scaling. That will naturally happen, as you grow more “spiritually fluent” – capable of holding relational space in a diverse community.

I will share more about that quality later on in this post.

The seed of Symbiotic Culture can take root in Symbiotic Circles of 3–12 trusted friends within an already-existing community context — a church, nonprofit, business, local government, or civic and social movements and networks. From there, circles federate into Symbiotic Societies (larger networks of circles), which in turn spawn multi-sector Symbiotic Network collaborations organized around shared community needs.

These Symbiotic Networks provide a parallel functional infrastructure that will strengthen local economies and ultimately reshape civic life and politics into a new Parallel Polis, as you will see later.

While this pathway can guide our steps, it cannot satisfy the hunger beneath them. To reach the heart of the matter, we must address the questions that never go away.

The Heart of the Matter: Building Networks That Unite Us

In conversations with changemakers worldwide, two questions keep surfacing:

First Question:

Is there anything that can unite a fragmented, conflicted, suffering humanity?

For thousands of years, political elites have relied on the tactic of “divide and rule” to the point where it’s become so ingrained that we fall for it almost every time. We have grown so accustomed to this persistent habit that groups reflexively fight one another rather than unite beyond divisions of race, religion, politics, class, or gender.

This battlefield mentality seems sadly woven into the human condition – or more accurately, human conditioning.

There is an alternative, less-celebrated history that offers countless examples of people rising above division to collaborate and cooperate. The “how” is surprisingly straightforward: through shared virtues, shared needs, and shared purpose – all of which we’ve codified in the Symbiotic Culture DNA.

While this history offers a proven, encouraging foundation — the lineage of the Ancient Blueprint — at the heart of my book is my lived experience building networks that have overcome division, even in polarized communities. These demonstrate practical, proven ways that people have chosen cooperation over conflict, often in the most challenging circumstances.

The stories and lessons I share provide a high-level guide to implementing the Symbiotic Culture strategy, enabling you to begin uniting your own community.

Second Question:

How can we make any headway in a time of global systemic breakdown with interrelated crises?

The paradox is that global problems cannot be solved globally. You must solve them locally — and work together in parallel —so that local communities can grow this new culture simultaneously worldwide, from the bottom up.

I get it — I’m proposing a sane society; I must be crazy!

I highlighted how Sarvodaya in Sri Lanka has already achieved this remarkable feat on a national scale — it is a model of multi-scalar (within and between communities) network growth that emerged into a national network of 5,000 local, “micro” bioregional ecosystem networks.

Symbiotic Culture is based partly on this world-renowned, sixty-five-year-old grassroots movement.

Sarvodaya – Building an Alternative Economy from the ground up

Sarvodaya has demonstrated fractal community empowerment — releasing an underlying, reproducible pattern that emerges from an Ancient Blueprint. My book will share the “secret sauce” of this Blueprint and Symbiotic Culture; actually, it isn’t secret, just hidden in plain sight beneath the noise of materialistic culture.

Instead of having to build a separate new organization as a silo, competitively, you build ecosystem networks based on shared universal principles and Virtues — unifying existing citizens, as well as local leaders and their organizations, businesses, networks, and local governments.

It’s about connecting the good in each community into an effective power for system change — reflecting what’s already happening in natural ecosystems. Think of mycelial networks beneath the forest floor: different species collaborating, exchanging nutrients, and sustaining the whole. What looks separate on the surface is deeply interconnected below. In the same way, communities can move beyond isolated silos to become part of a larger living network.

The Parallel Polis

The Symbiotic pathway naturally evolves toward what Václav Benda and Vaclav Havel called a Parallel Polis — a civic fabric built alongside failing institutions, rooted in trust, virtue, and mutual benefit. Benda and the dissidents of Charter 77 understood that under totalitarianism, the formal institutions of the state were too compromised to be reformed from within.

The task was not to wait for some outside intervention, but to build a new culture by what Havel called “living in truth” — refusing to live by lies, and instead embodying honesty, responsibility, and solidarity in everyday life.

It was both a moral stance and a practical act of resistance — a way ordinary people reclaimed freedom by creating parallel structures of trust and meaning, rooted in Václav Benda’s conviction that each person bears the Image of God.

Today, we face not the jackboots of overt totalitarianism but the subtler erosion of freedom in what many have called “soft totalitarianism.” We live under dueling oligarchies — one on the Left, one on the Right — both demanding loyalty, both weaponizing fear, and both incapable of providing a coherent future. What masquerades as democracy often devolves into managed polarization. This is not liberation; it is captivity by a modern version of empire.

Unlike ideological versions on the Left or Right, a United Parallel Polis is a broader tent, accommodating multiple worldviews while bridged by a Relational Worldview that weaves the siloed threads around a common purpose and shared needs.

A relational worldview does not seek to erase difference, but to build bridges across the silos of competing—and often polarized—worldviews. Where the Culture of Separation erects walls, this way of being cultivates relationships that make cooperation and shared flourishing possible.

It offers a parallel economy, society, and politics that grow from the bottom up, grounded in daily community needs. It is not an escape hatch, but a living alternative — a society within a society, where citizens relearn the habits of trust, practice virtue, and share responsibility for the commons.

In other words, we do not need to wait for governments or corporations to do it for us.

To prove it’s practical, let’s look to places where it’s already emerging.

The Ancient Blueprint in Action

Nearly twenty years ago, in Reno, Nevada, we convened community-wide meetings that included community leaders and average citizens. We used this diverse group to crowd-source shared principles, values, and virtues, and common community needs. Based on this collective wisdom, we built multiple ecosystem networks — food systems, local economy initiatives, neighborhood networks, arts collaborations, trans-faith initiatives, and more.

These experiments became the “Conscious Community Network,” “Weaver Groups,” and “Connections Gatherings.”

At the time, I thought of this as a local experiment; I later came to see it as part of an ancient stream of wisdom, a lineage that for me begins with Jesus Christ, whose Sermon on the Mount set forth a radically relational way of being: love God, love your neighbor, love even your enemy. Inspired by the Sermon, Gandhi carried this vision into his dream of India as a commonwealth of self-reliant communities.

Sarvodaya Shramadana in Sri Lanka demonstrated the same pattern at the national scale — showing how local awakenings can federate into a commonwealth of thousands of communities.

Václav Benda and Charter 77 rearticulated it as the Parallel Polis in communist Czechoslovakia. Countless Indigenous traditions have embodied it through relational reciprocity and ecological kinship. And our work in Reno, and now Symbiotic Culture, stands humbly in continuity with this stream and lineage.

This Ancient Blueprint keeps reappearing whenever societies seek to recover coherence. So the unavoidable question becomes: how do we translate this timeless pattern into the regeneration of spirit and society today?

The Regeneration of Spirit and Society

The good news is that there is far more that unites us than divides us — and history shows that communities can rediscover this unity when they root themselves in shared purposes, principles, virtues, and needs.

The answer was YES.

These shared principles, virtues, and community needs have held communities together for over 3,000 years. Through those meetings in Reno that I described earlier, we identified them and built ecosystem networks around food, the local living economy, neighborhoods, the arts, and religious/spiritual life.

Reno proved this truth at a local scale. Sarvodaya in Sri Lanka scaled it nationally, federating thousands of communities around the same shared virtues. These examples remind us that community renewal and regeneration, on a large scale, are possible.

Which brings us to today.

We face our own “All Hands On Deck” moment, where principles and virtues must be prioritized despite our conflicts and differences.

When qualities like love, humility, integrity, generosity, and patience are practiced together, they become relational protocols that expand trust networks. This Symbiotic Culture DNA is what gets “injected” through practice and embodiment into the networks we build to meet the twelve common needs (described below) of every community. When embodied, these virtues build the bridge from inner life to public life, from family to polis.

So here’s the question facing each of us now: Do we want to be Uniters or Dividers

The regeneration of Spirit inside us is what makes possible the regeneration of our neighborhoods, economies, and commons. The effects radiate outward in everyday interactions: from self → family → neighborhood → community → through existing networks → economies → politics. But virtues alone are not enough. They must be embodied in relationships that cross silos and tribes, creating trust where division once ruled.

This brings us to Symbiotic Kinship.

Symbiotic Kinship: The Relational Fabric of a New Culture

Symbiotic Kinship means extending our sense of belonging beyond the familiar tribes and silos we usually cling to — moving past narrow identities to embrace shared aspirations and mutual benefit.

Albert Einstein described the need for this shift:

“A human being … experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest — an optical delusion of his consciousness … a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion.”

At its heart, Symbiotic Kinship is about uniting citizens and organizations at the grassroots in the spirit of Universal or Divine Love. It is a proven way to transform the Culture of Separation into a Culture of Connection.

Divine Love is the operating system for the Culture of Connection, as its ultimate purpose and animating power. Virtues are the protocols for making love manifest in the world. They provide the shared “rules of exchange” that make trust and collaboration possible across differences; without humility, integrity, courage, and respect, relationships can’t sustain genuine cooperation. And trusted relationships are the secure channels — the human bonds through which these virtues actually flow, allowing estranged groups to risk connecting again.

In the midst of polarization and separation, we see signs of this relational fabric emerging. In local communities, people, nonprofits, faith groups, businesses, local governments, and movements are stepping up to meet today’s crises. Again and again, I’ve found leaders and citizens who sense that a deeper level of collaborative bridge-building is now required.

These scattered efforts are not isolated sparks but part of a larger pattern. I think of them as “islands of coherence” — vibrant initiatives that reveal a new world being born.

What is uniquely transformational about Symbiotic Networks is that, instead of being another silo competing with other well-meaning projects, they provide a context, an infrastructure to amplify the kinship that is already taking form in the community's worthy work.

Put another way, these networks are a delivery system for “connecting and weaving the good.”

And these are not abstract ideals; they are embodied in real movements today. In my book, I describe how these islands of coherence are ready to be joined into a broader Parallel Polis.

Here are ten of the movement threads I see already doing the work:

Symbiotic Kinship provides the cultural bond necessary, but a bond is not enough. It also requires a framework, which I call a Community Operating System, to sustain and scale the connections. Without such a framework, goodwill remains fragile — vulnerable to conflict, worn down by fatigue, and torn apart by the divisive pull of polarized politics.

The Community Operating System gives structure to relationship — shared purpose, principles, virtues, and needs — so that trust can grow, networks can expand, and cooperation can endure over time.

A New Community Operating System for a Culture of Connection

Every culture rests on an operating system—often invisible—that determines how people trust, collaborate, and respond to crises. Our current system, built on competition and control, fragments relationships and erodes trust.

This section introduces the five elements of Symbiotic Culture DNA — the foundation for activating the Ancient Blueprint in local communities. Each element builds on the one before, moving from shared purpose to principles, virtues, needs, and network design.

Again, it is not a utopia, but a practical blueprint rooted in what is most universal and enduring—purpose, principles, virtues, and needs—that can be adapted by any community. When practiced together, it becomes a cultural DNA capable of scaling through networks of trust.

1. Shared Purpose: Uniting the Cosmos in Love

At the heart of Symbiotic Culture is a shared purpose: to bring together what has been separated and unite humanity in Love — reconnecting ourselves and others to meaning, to one another, and to the broader web of life.

Today, culture — accelerated by social media — has fractured us into separate realities, isolating communities and eroding trust.

A Symbiotic Culture emerges when we normalize intentional mutual benefit, from person to planetary.

2. Eight Shared Principles: A Framework for Community Regeneration

Principles are the bedrock of any enduring community. They are not rules imposed from above, but universal design patterns discovered through lived experience and wisdom traditions. They point us back to the way life itself is ordered: cooperative, regenerative, relational.

Eight shared principles can guide us across cultures and contexts. They are like the DNA of the human community, woven into the fabric of creation, and serve as a compass pointing us toward true north.

These principles echo the lineage of the Ancient Blueprint, carried through Jesus (Love God and Love Others), Gandhi (Commonwealth of Village Republics), Sarvodaya Shramadana in Sri Lanka (New Economy), and even Thomas Jefferson’s civic imagination of America as a federation of Ward Republics.

They remind us that life is interdependent, diversity is strength, reciprocity sustains the whole, and sacredness runs through creation. Each community will express them differently, but the orientation remains the same: toward wholeness, justice, and mutual flourishing.

It’s not about belief — it’s about action. Living these out together, principles become a new way of life.

3. Five Shared Virtues: Walking Our Talk

If principles provide the ethical framework, Virtues supply the energy. They are the lived protocol — the qualities that allow trust to build and collaboration to deepen.

Symbiotic Culture lifts up what I call five Transcendent virtues as civic infrastructure: Love, Integrity, Courage, Service, and Respect.

When embodied in action, virtues bridge differences and generate the trust on which all healthy networks depend. They move us from lofty ideas to grounded reality. When virtues move from abstraction into daily practice — such as feeding families, supporting neighbors, and stewarding land — they evolve beyond ethics to become part of civic infrastructure. And that’s when they connect directly to the twelve common needs.

4. Twelve Community Needs: Building Around What We Hold in Common

Beyond good intentions, every community flourishes only when its members’ basic needs are met. The Symbiotic Community Operating System identifies twelve common human needs — from Food and Water, Energy, Local Living Economy, Clean & Healthy Natural Environment, Community Peace & Safety, Neighbor Helping Neighbor, Community Empowerment of those on the “Margins,” Arts & Culture, Housing, Family and Community Health & Wellness, Education and Mentoring, Religion/Spirituality in Service.

Farmers, artists, business owners, parents, elders, pastors, activists, local governments, and youth all find common cause when the focus is on serving the whole. In this way, needs become a foundation for parallel civic life, where communities build resilient systems of care and collaboration.

These are the everyday challenges that everyone can get behind: growing and consuming more local food, strengthening the local economy, ensuring a clean and healthy environment, supporting wellness, practicing faith and spirituality, serving those on the margins, and more. They are also areas of community life that people are already passionate about.

This is the new playing field: where competition gives way to collaboration, and silos become nodes in a shared fabric.

5. Symbiotic Infrastructure: From Circles to Societies to Trust Networks

Purpose, principles, virtues, and needs come alive fully only when linked through a new form of network infrastructure that connects all of the goodness and good works already happening in a local region.

This multi-scalar, fractal growth pattern allows culture to scale without losing trust at the local level. Networks of circles and communities create resilience across sectors — economic, social, ecological, and spiritual.

In this way, Symbiotic Culture spreads not through control but through connection.

The Symbiotic Community Operating System offers a practical blueprint that any local community can adopt immediately. As each bioregion builds its ecosystem networks, these local networks connect organically and form a cohesive whole system.

When communities address needs in this way, they begin creating a larger fabric: a Network Commons — a parallel culture, society, economy, and politics.

By grounding themselves in shared purpose, principles, virtues, needs, and networks, communities can activate the Ancient Blueprint — building a culture of trust, resilience, and love from the ground up.

Putting it All Together: A New Network Commons of a Parallel Polis

Building a Network Commons requires both an interior and spiritual developmental process, as well as real-world, practical network building, which involves “multi-scalar” and “fractal” network evolution.

• Multi-scalar refers to networks of organizations that spread horizontally within a community, extending upward to national and global levels, with the necessary infrastructure to support them.

• Fractal means that there are patterns and universal structures within the Ancient Blueprint that, when embodied in one community, could simultaneously emerge in thousands of communities!

The focus is on building a new, parallel Culture of Connection as “scaffolding,” a new “Network Commons,” a bridge to a new culture alongside (and interdependent yet independent of) the existing Culture of Separation.

When you connect across silos, you release the hidden and “frozen” assets available in any community.

A Network Commons represents a community-based collaborative initiative where nonprofits, religious organizations, civic entities, mutual aid and gifting groups, cooperatives, private enterprises, and public resources are intentionally interconnected, shared, and governed by an engaged community of stakeholders.

It comprises various interdependent, distributed, and symbiotic networks engaged in widespread collaboration, embodying a peer-driven production and consumption model.

It encourages local communities to produce and consume local goods, services, and knowledge, which are then linked to self-organized regional marketplaces for the mutual benefit of individuals, organizations, businesses, and the broader community.

Examples include networks that strengthen local systems for food, energy, and water, boost the local economy, and promote and advance endeavors that serve those on the margins of society, including education, housing, arts, culture, spirituality, wellness, and healthy local living environments.

The example below shows how the approach applies to building a Local Food System Network. The principles underlying Symbiotic Networks can be used to any community need or purpose, even within your existing organizational network.

But every commons begins small — with circles of trust.

Activating Symbiotic Circles and Societies

The practical on-ramp is simple: start with Symbiotic Circles (3–12 people). Think of them as the “seed” of the larger journey: circles → societies → networks → local economies → a Parallel Polis. Each step builds on the one before.

These circles gather to embody and inculcate the Symbiotic Culture DNA — shared principles, virtues, and community needs — and begin to identify what matters most in their community.

Circles gather around shared needs, embed virtues in practice, and connect across silos.

As suggested earlier, circles are the seed form of a new culture. As they come together in a convening body, they form a Symbiotic Society. In this container, people from diverse political, religious, professional, and identity backgrounds can come together under a larger Transcendent identity.

In that space, our smaller labels fall away; like entering a cathedral, we take off our shoes and remember we stand on sacred ground together. And this vision of a sacred container is not just poetic — history shows us it can be embodied in practice.

Symbiotic Societies anchor networks across a region. They are not theoretical — this group structure draws from proven precedents, including Sarvodaya Societies in Sri Lanka and the Conscious Community Networks, Weaver Groups, and Connections Gatherings in Reno.

Their purpose, structure, and process are based on the proven track record of grassroots societies that helped whole nations awaken.

So, in the end, what are we really recovering?

Not nostalgia for a perfect past, but the Transcendent itself — however we each understand Him, or if you see that as an It — and the agreed-upon Virtues that flow from that Source. These virtues reconnect us to the sacred and then bind together the “nodes of intersection” (silos) within the organizational networks in which we are already embedded.

We begin with ourselves and our families, the nucleus of society, then move on to our neighbors, organizations, other networks, and communities. As circles convene into societies and societies interlink into networks, you can feel civic coherence forming — over time, this radiates outward, embodying what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. called the Beloved Community.

The recovery groups support both personal and community transition toward a new way of life: a Culture of Connection.

And so the question becomes: how do we carry this recovery into daily life, into families and neighborhoods, into societies and nations? To answer that, here is an overview of the elements of a relational worldview and strategy.

Remember that these six main worldview elements above are not set in stone and are likely to evolve in the future. There are reasons why these elements have been chosen—they reflect a common understanding, as they have been tested in the real world, and THEY WORK.

These are the building blocks. But the vision is larger still. So now let’s reflect on what we are building.

Rising Together: From Separation to Communion

We stand at a threshold. Separation has run its course; connection waits to be born. What begins as a meal with neighbors, a circle of trust, or a shared garden can scale into a new society and civilization where our hearts feel at home.

What is required is a return to the Source — God, the Logos, the Transcendent. Only this Eternal Presence can re-root a person, reboot a culture, regenerate a virtuous economy, and ultimately guide our politics.

Start small. Stay faithful. Weave wide. Rise together. One parallel polis at a time.

This is part of a series of stand-alone essays drawn from real-world community experiences shared in my book, Birthing the Symbiotic Age: An Ancient Blueprint to Unite Humanity.

Based on these experiences, each piece explores a practical, spiritually rooted path toward rebuilding trust, community, and culture from the ground up—what I call Symbiotic Culture. While the essays can be read independently, together they weave a pattern of renewal through Love, kinship, and local action.

Introduction: Rediscovering the Village in a Fractured World

We live in an age of hyper connection—and yet, deep disconnection. Technology binds us to global newsfeeds, yet many can’t name their neighbor. Institutions expand, but trust erodes. We scroll past each other, unseen. In this fractured world, something ancient is stirring: a longing not just to be informed, but to belong.

It’s about remembering what we never should have lost.

Re-villaging isn’t just about potlucks or local economies.

It is the cultural expression of a deeper transformation—what early Christians called metanoia: a turning of the heart away from isolation and toward communion with God and neighbor. It is a sacred recovery of the relational operating system that once made us whole, rooted in the Ancient Blueprint that calls us to Love God and Love our neighbor as ourselves.

Re-villaging is more than a method, it is a sacred protocol embedded in the fabric of Creation. A way of life capable of scaling trust, rebuilding community, and renewing the world from the ground up.

This longing isn’t hypothetical, it took root in our own community – Reno, Nevada in the mid-2000’s.

The Longing to Belong: Love Thy Neighbor, Rediscovered

Our path in Reno during the 2000s began not with a strategic plan, but with a question: How do we make “Love Thy Neighbor” real again?

Long before our neighborhood efforts took shape, we had already piloted a regional experiment in symbiotic community-building. We had built community systems before—a Local Living Economy Network and Local Food System Network—that supported civic cooperation without staff, budgets, or formal hierarchies. They functioned more like ecosystems than organizations.

These earlier initiatives served as a living prototype of what I now refer to as Symbiotic Culture DNA.

So, we did.

On Valentine’s Day in 2006, we launched a campaign that asked people to take the Ancient Blueprint seriously—not as an abstraction, but as a practice. The spark caught quickly. Within a year of that meeting, I wrote an opinion piece for the Reno Gazette Journal about the decline of neighborliness.

That article literally ignited a movement. Within two weeks, people throughout Northern Nevada began organizing their own neighbor gatherings, without any organization or infrastructure.

During the next six months, we started to spread the word and organized our first annual region-wide Neighbors Week. Neighbors organized potlucks, shared tools, checked on elders. Local newspapers covered it. TV stations donated airtime. Flyers invited people to simply say hello.

One article read: “We’ve been to the moon and back but have trouble crossing the street to meet our neighbor.” That line resonated. Within weeks, more spontaneous gatherings bloomed across Reno. Something sacred had been awakened—the longing to belong.

The Village as Operating System

Re-villaging is not a return to quaint nostalgia. It is the recognition that the village is a functional protocol for civilization—an organic system designed to cultivate care, resilience, and mutual benefit at human scale.

Imagine an operating system not written in code, but grounded in Virtue, practiced throughout a community on a daily basis.

Where your neighborhood becomes a relational network, self-organizing around needs and offerings. Where the “apps” are not programs, but potlucks, shared gardens, elder care, and babysitting co-ops. Where data isn’t mined, but trust is grown. Where everyone is both user and contributor.

That’s what we witnessed. This network wasn’t just transactional; it was a tangible expression of “Love thy neighbor,” re-villaging in action.

Our networks didn’t compete with official systems. They complemented them, forming a parallel society not to escape the world, but to help heal it from within.

This spirit of complementarity—of forming something alongside, not in opposition to existing structures —brings us back to the neighborhood itself.

From Garage Doors to Gathering Circles

In modern neighborhoods, the garage door has replaced the front porch. As sociologist Robert Putnam documented in Bowling Alone, we’ve traded civic life for private entertainment, intimacy for independence.

But our alienation runs deeper than just architecture.

Instead of gathering with neighbors, we isolate in front of the small screen, obsessing about things we can do little about. We scroll, we argue, we “stand for justice” online, all while rarely knowing the names of the people across the street. In a world of global crises and curated outrage, the neighborhood has become invisible.

This disconnection isn’t just unfortunate, it’s a design failure.

This heartful connection expressed in many ways.

One woman, long isolated, began organizing a block party. A teenager mowed the lawn of a widowed elder. Single moms started babysitting circles. No one forced them to do any of these things.

It was voluntary and reflected the natural desire of people to help one another—a conscious or unconscious recognition that as we receive Divine Love, we want to share it by being in communion with others, for their own sake. That’s why the idea caught on naturally.

As I mentioned, we called this Neighbor Week. Over time, it became something much more: a movement rooted in belonging. More than 65 neighborhoods joined. Local media covered it daily. National magazines like Parade told our story to 40 million readers.

This wasn’t charity. It was kinship. And in that kinship, something deeper stirred: a recovery of the relational worldview that stands in stark contrast to the mechanistic and individualistic paradigm that dominates modern life.

What we’ve come to call Symbiotic Kinship is the heart and soul of re-villaging.

The Sacred Engine of Kinship

What made this work wasn’t so much new systems and structures, but the Spirit that created and fueled them.

Behind every successful gathering was something deeper than logistics—a living current of Love. Not sentimental Love, but agape: self-giving, generative, transcendent. This was the same power that animated the early Christians, Gandhi’s satyagraha, and Dr. Ari’s Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka. It was Divine Love made practical.

We didn’t preach sermons—we became them. We didn’t recruit—we invited. We didn’t push values, we embodied them.

We noticed a fractal pattern emerging; wherever Love took root, kinship followed. These neighborhoods became “caring circles,” decentralized and self-directed, yet spiritually aligned without doctrine or dogma. Our networks weren’t run by agencies or grants, but by people grounded in Virtue.

That Love, once lived communally, gave birth to something deeper still—networks of resilience. These circles of kinship didn’t just make us feel connected—they prepared us for a world in crisis.

The Ark We Built Together

Even as contemporary society became more polarized and impersonal, our neighbor-to-neighbor trust deepened, and networks expanded into something even more robust: systems of shared resilience.

No top-down agency could have done what we did. When we discovered that 10,000 seniors in our region were living in isolation, local institutions shrugged: “not enough money or staff.” Our network didn’t need staff. We had real people – neighbors – to pick up the slack.

Through informal gatherings, teens delivered groceries, elders mentored youth, gardeners swapped surplus, and compassion rippled outward.

Instead of relying on the government or formal social services, neighbors took direct action—this is what revillaging looks like in practice. Where the “Titanic” bureaucracies and institutions were failing, the floating Ark was the lifeboat.

The Good Samaritan and the Ancient Blueprint

What we witnessed in our neighborhood gatherings wasn’t new—it was an ancient pattern re-emerging. Beneath the potlucks and block parties was a living echo of the early Christian communities who made Love tangible, crossing tribal lines to care for friend and stranger alike, practicing hospitality and mercy towards all.

Jesus captured this ethic in the Parable of the Good Samaritan.

When asked, “Who is my neighbor?” he answered with a story: not about religious belief, but about Love in action. The one who stopped to help was not the priest or Levite, but the outsider—the Samaritan—who showed compassion beyond tribes and across boundaries.

This, Jesus said, is a true neighbor.

This was the pattern we saw emerging in our own networks. Teens helping elders. Strangers becoming kin. A spirituality that transcended beliefs and manifested in acts of service. It reminded us: The Ancient Blueprint isn’t some abstract idea; it’s a tried-and-true template that works.

We don’t need a new model for re-villaging. We just need to embody and animate what has always been true—locally, humbly, together.

As G.K. Chesterton wrote, “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.”

Re-Villaging the World, One Street at a Time

As I wrote earlier, the village is where we cultivate care, resilience, and mutual benefit at a human scale. What we discovered in Reno is that the re-villaging so many of us long for in this materialistic, polarized society is not a new invention—it’s the reawakening of an ancient pattern.

From early Christian communities to Gandhi’s self-rule villages to Dr. Ariyaratne’s Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka, the Blueprint has always been there—patiently waiting to be lived.

Yet even with this clarity, old mindsets within the Culture of Separation surfaced.

While organizing the Reno networks, a small group of pastors told me they’d only participate if allowed to recruit. They were still thinking in terms of “market share,” as if community were a competition.

Re-villaging isn’t about conversion—it’s about compassion and collaboration.

At the same time, some of the more secular or political participants questioned why we weren’t taking public stances—on war, elections, or climate change. A few even suggested using our neighbor-to-neighbor work to push those agendas.

What may have seemed like a small act—knocking on a door, organizing a potluck, helping an elder—was actually part of something much bigger.

As I describe throughout this book, re-villaging is the second step in a five-stage process of building a local, parallel society, culture, and economy. Whether at the level of family, block, neighborhood, organization, or region, these relational acts weave the hidden infrastructure of trust.

That trust is the essential foundation for any true “village”—one that not only heals disconnection but also lays the scaffolding for a new world, grounded in Sacred Design and Symbiotic Culture DNA.

Conclusion: The Kingdom of Heaven On the Street Where You Live

When we have our focus on world problems, they feel overwhelming, and we may feel powerless. And that brings us to a key lesson we learned in our re-villaging experiment in Reno.

Start where you are.

Transforming society from a Culture of Separation to a Culture of Connection begins with a conscious, loving, individual act. We may not be in a formal position of leadership – as a politician, media influencer, corporate executive or even non-profit leader. But we all can be informal leaders who lead by example.

Every one of us has a front door, a street we live on, neighbors and a neighborhood. And that is where the miracle begins.

Re-villaging doesn’t require permission. It begins with presence.

Walk out of your door, and walk down the street. Smile. Say hello. Organize a potluck. Offer help. Share a backyard harvest. Invite people into a circle of care. In every neighborhood, hidden gifts are waiting to be discovered, “frozen assets” that when liberated add to wealth and wellbeing. In this simple way, every block contains seeds of a new civilization.

As the prophet Micah said:

“What does the Lord require of you but to act justly, to Love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

That walk is re-villaging—humble, daily, sacred.

The protocol is already written. The design is Divine. The blueprint is ancient. The fuel is Love. The place to begin?
